Carbonless Sequence Test Procedure

Any copier and printer can print Carbonless paper. All sheets are about the same thickness as standard 20# bond copy paper. However, unlike regular bond paper, we need to know how your printer/copy machine handles the paper.

NOTE: Without impact, the sheets can not be connected into sets prior to printing. Just like offset printers have been doing for years, you will be printing each sheet individually. Padding into sets is an option you will learn about later.

Carbonless paper comes to you in the package PRINT SIDE UP. The UP side is the one you want to image so when you write on the finished set, the carbon action will work correctly. IF THE COLOR SEQUENCE DOES NOT COME OUT CORRECTLY, YOU CAN NOT JUST TURN THE PAPER OVER!

Q:
How do you know which to order?
A: If all you need is two part, the answer is easy. Standard two part only comes in REVERSE SEQUENCE. That is to say, the package starts out with a yellow sheet, then white, then yellow, etc. If the sequence comes out of your printer wrong, you just remove the yellow from the top of the package and put in at the bottom on the package. You now have a STRAIGHT SEQUENCE package (White/Yellow). The two part is the only one you convert yourself. YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONTINUE WITH THE TEST!

If you have an Ink Jet Printer with a straight thru paper path, you will require REVERSE SEQUENCE and YOU DO NOT NEED TO CONTINUE WITH THE TEST!

For 3 or more parts, and you are going to print only one side, the easiest way to determine what sequence you need is to follow the TEST PROCEDURE below. It is important that you setup the printer just as you will when you are printing your forms. Changing the tray or opening the bypass delivery can change the test results.

TEST PROCEDURE:

This test, using three part, is valid even if you are interested in more parts then three.

  1. Take three sheets of paper and print "1" on the first one, "2" on the second, and "3" on the third sheet which will simulate "White", "Canary" and "Pink" colored paper.

  2. Insert all three sheets as a set into your printer's tray. The side you have numbered represents the print side, so if you already know which way the sheets need to be, insert them that way. If not, pick one. Remember which way you put them, because if the test fails, you will need to number 3 more blank sheets and try the test again facing the sheets the other way.

  3. Open any word processor program and type "TEST"

  4. Request 3 copies to be printed.

  5. The first part of the test is:
DID YOU PRINT THE WORD "TEST" ON THE SAME SIDE OF THE PAPER AS YOU HAND WROTE THE NUMBER 1, 2, AND 3?

  6. If the answer is NO, start again from step 1.

  7. If the answer is YES, pick up the 3 sheets as a set.

    1. IF YOU ARE GOING TO IMPRINT ONE SIDE ONLY!

      1. If the number on the top sheet is 1 - you need STRAIGHT or FORWARD sequence.

      2. If the number on the top sheet is 3 - you need REVERSE sequence.

    2. IF YOU ARE GOING TO IMPRINT BOTH SIDES:

      1. If you found that you require STRAIGHT or FORWARD sequence, then it will not make any difference. No mater how many times you put the sheets through your printer, the sequence will stay the same.

      2. However, if your test indicated that you need REVERSE sequence, and you are going to put the sheets through your printer twice (1 front pass and 1 back pass) you will need to order STRAIGHT sequence. The first pass will reverse the sheets, and the second will reverse it back to straight.
