logo Glossary of Mailing Terms
3rd Class Mail The old term which was synonymous with Bulk mail. It has been replaced with "Standard Mail (A)."
AADC Automated Area Distribution Center - An area distribution center (ADC) that is equipped with optical character readers (OCRs), barcode sorters (BCSs), and other mail processing mechanization designed for the processing of automation-compatible mail. Also see ADC.
ACS Address Change Service - An automated process that provides change-of-address information to mailers who maintain their mailing lists on computers. The information is captured in the computerized forwarding system (DFS) units and sent to mailers on tape to eliminate manual processing of change information.
ADC Area Distribution Center - A mail processing facility that receives and distributes mail destined for specific ZIP Code area under the managed mail program (MMP). An ADC is one of the points within the national MMP distribution network.
AIS Address Information Systems - Also known as Address Management; an organizational unit that provides USPS policy and systems on address list serviced, address correction, forwarding, and other ancillary services.
AMF Airport Mail Facility - A postal facility at an airport that receives, distributes, and dispatches mail transported by air.
AMPC Area Mail Processing Center - A central mail processing facility that processes part of all of both incoming and outgoing mail for a designated service area. Usually the AMPC is also and SCF or other large post office, but it may be a dedicated mail processing facility without a station, branch, or associated post office.
AMS Alternate Delivery Services - A procedure that provides for accepting permit imprint mail to ensure proper postage payment and mail preparation without verification by weight.
APO Army [Air Force] Post Office - A military post office that is located outside the continental United States
ARM Accelerated Reply Mail - Origin caller service provided at a postal facility other that the one to which caller's mail is addressed, by which reply mail from the caller's customers is captured by the Postal Service for either immediate delivery to the caller or reshipment by Express Mail to the caller's address.
ASF Auxiliary Service Facility - A mechanized facility, usually part of a CMF, that serves as a subordinate processing hub for a parent bulk mail center Automation Mailing pieces meeting the Compatible standards allowing for address scanning and automatic sorting.
Barcode A ZIP+4 barcode is made up of a single field of 52 bars. The information content of the barcode is based on the combination of tall and short bars. When separated into groups of five, these bars sequentially represent each of the nine digits of the ZIP+4 code for the delivery address, plus a tenth digit designated as the "Correction digit."

BCSs Barcode Sorters
BRM Business Reply Mail - A domestic service that allows specially printed cards, envelopes, cartons, and labels to be mailed without prepayment of postage. Postage and fees are collected when the mail is delivered to the addressee who originally distributed the BRM.
BRMAS Business Reply Mail Accounting System - An automated means of processing and rating prebarcoded BRM though BRM customer may be eligible for a lower fee that would otherwise apply to BRM. Bulk Mail The old term which was synonymous with 3rd Class mail. It was replaced with "Standard Mail (A)." Bundle A result of a pre-sorted mailing. Generally a package of 10 or more pieces rubber banded together.
Carrier Route The line of travel and addresses served by a carrier to deliver mail to customers. In common usage, "carrier route" includes city carrier routes, rural routes, highway contract routes, post office box sections, and general delivery units.
CASS Coding Accuracy Support System The process where the ZIP+4 and CRRT numbers are matched with the Address, City and State. The end result is a dated certificate of accuracy valid for 90 days for the CRRT, and 12 months for the ZIP+4.

CMRS Computerized Remote postage meter Resetting System
COD Collect On Delivery - The USPS return by money order the amount due the sender. COD is unavailable with pre-sorted "BULK" mail.
CPO Community Post Office - A contract postal unit that serves a small community.
CPP Centralized Postage Payment [system] - A postage payment procedure that allows publishers of authorized publications entered at three or more post offices to pay postage at a single postal facility rather than through accounts maintained at each entry post office.
CRIS Carrier Route Information System - A listing of all delivery address range information in a standardized format. CRIS contains city, rural and highway contract route and post office box schemes. The data is formatted by ZIP Code, street name and street number range.

DBMC Destination Bulk Mail Center [rate] - A discount/rate available to specific types of mail that is properly prepared and entered by the mailer and the BMC or other designated postal facility that serves the delivery address on the mail.
DDU Destination Delivery Unit [rate] - A discount/rate available to specific types of mail that is properly prepared and entered by the mailer at the BMC or other designated postal facility that serves the delivery address on the mail.

DMM Domestic Mail Manual - The USPS manual that contain the basic standard of the United States Postal Service.
DMU Detached Mail Unit - An area in a mailer's facility where postal employees assigned to a specific post office work to perform mail verification, acceptance, dispatch, or other postal functions.
DPBC Delivery Point Bar Code - POSTNET barcode that consists of 62 bars with beginning and ending frame bars and 5 bars each for the 9 digits of the ZIP+4 code, the last 2 digits of the primary street address number (or post office box, etc.), and a correction digit. The DPBC allows automated Sortation of mail to the level in walk-sequence.
DSCF Destination Sectional Service Facilities [rate] - A discount/rate available to specific types of mail that is properly prepared and entered by the mailer at the SCF or other designated postal facility that serves the delivery address on the mail.
Enhanced Carrier Route Mailings of 200 or more addressed Standard Mail pieces 100% delivery point bar-coded (C840), and sorted and marked, as required. All pieces must be automation-compatible (C810). Pieces are eligible if not required to be mailed at first-class rates or at Periodicals rates.
EPO Entry Post Office - A post office at which a CPP mailer deposits mailing to be paid for through an account maintained at the DPO.
FIM Facing Identification Mark - Identifies the type of "postage to be paid by" mail.
Flats See FLTS
FLTS Flats (flat-size mail) - A code used on mail container labels that identifies the contents as flats (mail pieces that exceed on of the dimensions for letter-sized mail). See Flats.
FPO Fleet Post Office - A military post office that serves US Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
GMF General Mail Facility - A facility that processes and distributes mail.
GPO General Post Office - The main post office in a city where there are several branches. A GPO provides complete postal services to a specific area.
IMM International Mail Manual - The USPS manual that contains classification regulation and other requirements for mailing between the United States and other countries.
Indicia Information which identifies a specific permit holder. Printed on the mailing piece in place of a standard postage stamp.

LOT Line Of Travel - See walk sequence.
LTRS Letters (letter-sized mail) - A code used on mail container labels the identifies the contents as letters (mail pieces, including cards, that do not exceed any of the dimensions for letter-size mail).

MXD Mixed - A code used on mail container labels that identifies the contents as mixed mail for different destinations.
NDCBU Neighborhood Delivery and Collection Box Units
Nonautomation Mailing pieces that do not meet Compatible standards allowing for address scanning and automatic sorting.
None A discount/rate available to specific types of mail that is properly prepared and entered by the mailer at the local postal facility other than a DBMC or DSCF. It may also apply to mailing pieces that do not qualify for any other type of discount regardless of the type of postal facility the pieces are delivered to.

PAVE Presort Accuracy Validation and Evaluation
Permit Imprint The information printed on the mailing piece that indicates the permit number, the city and state the permit is issued.
Polywrap Polywrap, shrink-wrap, or polybag material is may not be acceptable for enclosing mail pieces in automation rate mailings unless tested and approved in writing by the manager, Customer Mail Preparation, USPS Headquarters.

PRD Print Reflectance Difference
Presort The process where computer software sorts the mailing address data according to the current USPS specifications and requirements prior to the printing of the addresses onto labels or directly onto the mail piece. Current USPS requirements dictate that the software be PAVE certified.
PS-3602-N Postage Statement Form for Standard Mail (A) (Nonprofit) with the permit imprint printed on the mailing pieces.
PS-3602-PN Postage Statement Form for Standard Mail (A) (Nonprofit) with the postage affixed to the mailing pieces.

Residual Residual pieces are those not sorted under M693 to qualify for carrier route rates.
Self-Mailer A mailing piece that does not required an envelope.
SCF Sectional Service Facility
Standard Mail (A) The new term which replaced "BULK MAIL" and "3rd CLASS MAIL." See DMM specifications for Letters, Flats and Post Cards.
Tab A tab (wafer seal) - used to seal a folded self-mailer.
USPS United States Postal Service.
Wafer Seal A wafer seal (tab) - used to seal a folded self-mailer.
Walk Sequence The route the mail carrier takes when delivering of the mail.
